Special consideration is given to qualified veterans who apply for jobs with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). This is known as Veterans Preference, and not all veterans are entitled to it. Generally veterans must have served on active duty for at least two years during a period of war, be disabled or meet other criteria. While Veterans Preference does not guarantee a job, there are special hiring considerations that can make it more likely that you will be considered. There is also a Derived Preference program, that allows certain eligible spouses, widows/widowers or mothers of a veteran to claim Veterans Preference when the veteran is unable.
