Homeland Security helps to secure our nation’s borders, airports, seaports and waterways. Employees also research and develop the latest security technologies and analyze intelligence reports. They respond to natural disasters or terrorist threats and assaults, and do much more. There are a number of component agencies that are included under Homeland Security, including the following:
- Citizenship and Immigration Services: Maintain the integrity of our nation’s immigration system
- Customs and Border Protection: Work on the frontline or behind the scenes protecting our borders
- Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA): Assist with disaster relief
- Federal Law Enforcement Training Center: This inter-agency center trains law enforcement officers
- Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE): Enforce our nation’s immigration and customs laws
- Transportation Security Administration (TSA): Ensure the smooth operation of airports and air traffic and other transportation systems, for better safety and to guard against threats
- U.S. Coast Guard: One of the five branches of the US Armed Forces, the Coast Guard is under the jurisdiction of DHS
- U.S. Secret Service: The Secret Service offers careers in protecting national and visiting foreign leaders, and criminal investigations
These positions may be on the front-lines, or in an administrative capacity important to ensure the ongoing operations of the important missions of each of these agencies.
